Supporting Skanska to deliver £100m National Grid pipeline project

National Grid Humber Project Skanska

At the end of 2016 we took on one of our largest ever projects; to provide support facilities for the team which is delivering the £100m National Grid Humber Tunnel pipeline. This extraordinary project is of epic proportions and the pipeline will have the potential to convey up to 40% of the nation’s gas supply.

Skanska, which is working in a joint venture partnership, is designing and building a replacement high-pressure gas pipeline within a tunnel underneath the River Humber. When complete it will be 5.5km long with a diameter of 5m; the longest tunnel gas pipeline, inserted in a single string, in the world.

AVDanzer is providing a total of 50 welfare modules to support the on-site team of managers, contractors and sub-contractors. The facilities will include toilet and wash room, changing rooms, lockers, relaxation areas, offices and meeting rooms. The units are currently being manufactured at Langley Mill and will be on site from April.

The three-year project is worth nearly £40m to Skanska and will see the existing pipeline, which lies on the riverbed, replaced with the 5.5km tunnel route. Over time, the tidal patterns of the River Humber have eroded the river bed which covered the existing pipeline, leading to parts of it being at risk of being exposed.

The team plans to insert a single string of 42” steel pipe and connect into the above-ground installations at Paull, east of Hull, and Goxhill on the opposite bank of the Humber.

More detail about the project was reported on in the Construction Enquirer and you can read more about it here.

Colin Nicol, operations director, Skanska said: “The joint venture was formed to bring together international expertise to deliver, in an innovative, sustainable and collaborative way, a tunnel that will protect the pipeline for the long term, helping National Grid to provide a vital service to millions of people.”

The River Humber pipeline is part of the national transmission system – connecting the import terminal at Easington, on the East Yorkshire coast, to the wider network and delivering gas to millions of customers throughout the UK.

Linkpak modular solution for Nottingham’s highways team

Linkpak modular solution for Nottingham’s highways team

Nottingham Highways AV Danzer

In July we reported on an order for another new Linkpak project, this time for Nottingham County Council’s Highways depot at Bilsthorpe. This has now been installed and commissioned and is receiving great feedback from the team who are thrilled with their new facility.

Due to the amalgamation and consolidation of other parts of the Highways department, they needed more space for their operation so the Council approached AVDanzer for a modular solution which would deliver the space required.

We manufactured, delivered and installed six Linkpak modular units which were configured to provide a new office space, a meeting room, kitchen, server room and lobby. The new building will be used as the road team’s operational centre as well as to provide space which can be used as a training facility.

The exterior has been finished in Grey Goosewing Plastisol cladding with Merlin grey fascia and an external canopy has been added to link the new facility to the existing building, ensuring people can move around under shelter. We finished the interior fit out with Gradus Latour carpet tiles and a Polyfloor vinyl flooring to the lobby and kitchen.

We delivered and installed the units in one day using a 70-tonne mobile crane and two articulated lorries which each did three trips from our Langley Mill factory. The team completed the entire fit-out within ten days and laid the floor in time for Christmas.

The team at Bilsthorpe have now taken control of the building and have said how delighted they are with the quality and great service which was provided.

It’s always great to receive good feedback and we hope they enjoy their new space for many years to come.

Rental accommodation booms across Manchester

Rental accommodation booms across Manchester

Murray Mills

2017 looks set to be another strong year for the rental side of our business which continues to grow apace.

With a sustained level of investment coming into the city and more developments being approved every month it is great news for the city and for AVDanzer too. Our welfare units are rapidly becoming the go-to solution for developers looking for a fast, efficient and cost-effective solution during the rapid build phase of these land mark regeneration schemes.

Chinese investment continues to flood into the Manchester property market and the City Council’s first planning committee of 2017 looks set to approve millions of pounds of further development later this month.

And nowhere is busier than the historic Murray Mills in Ancoats, East Manchester where we are providing welfare accommodation units for both Graham Construction and Eric Wright Construction.

Both firms are working with Manchester Life Development Company on this extensive regeneration project which is set to deliver 124 new city homes.

Both Eric Wright and Grahams asked AVDanzer to provide site accommodation units for their teams working on this fantastic development. We now have three separate commissions from Eric Wright across this landmark regeneration project, totaling 24 units and a further 13 units on the same scheme for Grahams.

The units are all triple stacked and provide welfare facilities including toilets, changing rooms, a canteen, kitchen and induction/meeting rooms together with office spaces.

Murrays Mills will be ready for occupation by Autumn 2017.

Supporting Smartworks At Christmas

SMARTWORKS AV Danzer

Every year we hold our now legendary staff Christmas Raffle which helps us to raise funds for local charities. We put all of our generous supplier-donated Christmas gifts into the mix and our wonderful team bake cakes and contribute additional prizes too.

Last year we raised £376 for the Wellspring Centre in Stockport which supports homeless and disadvantaged people in our community so let’s see how well we do this year!!

This Christmas we will be supporting Smartworks, a Manchester-based charity which helps women get back to work. They provide guidance, support and advice as well as helping people with donations of smart clothing for interviews and beyond.

Georgina Walkden from Smartworks explains how the organisation works. She said: “Smart Works provides high quality interview clothing, styling advice and interview training to out-of-work women on low incomes.  We help women to feel confident, look fabulous, succeed at their job interview and move on with their life. This donation from AVDanzer will be really valuable to help us continue our work in 2017 and I’d like to thank the team very much for supporting us.”

Smartworks helps women who need interview-appropriate outfits.  They are given clothes and accessories (theirs to keep) and are provided with one-to-one preparation training so they feel more confident and able to believe in their own ability to succeed.

AVDanzer’s Helen Scott said: “Smartworks is a fantastic charity that really works and helps to change the lives of so many women and we are delighted to be donating to them this year. I believe that offering support to women whose self-confidence is low and who want to work, but are perhaps struggling to find a way back in, has a really positive impact on our society. For mothers trying to return to work it helps them find a way back in and to be role models and provide for their children as they wish to which is so important.”

The Raffle will take place in the Denton office on Friday 23rd December and we will let you know how much we raise.

Mucking in with Skanska and Balfour Beatty at Crossness sewage treatment plant

Crossness Water Treatment AV Danzer Skanska Balfour Beatty Thames Water

AVDanzer has provided superb welfare facilities for a joint venture between Skanska and Balfour Beatty at the Crossness sewage treatment plant in Thamesmead, London.

The joint venture between the two organisations will see them provide design-and-build solutions for the development and delivery of Thames Water’s ground breaking £2billion improvements programme in a ‘super alliance’ of industry-leading organisations.

We have provided a 17 module welfare unit to accommodate the contractors and sub-contractors working on the project. The facilities include a great canteen and relaxation areas, training and meeting rooms as well as toilets and showers. The units have been purchased by the JV and will remain on site for the duration of the project which is likely to be 2-5 years.

Commenting on the commission, AVDanzer’s John Roper said: “We have worked with Skanska on numerous sites over the years but the projects being delivered by this JV partnership are on an enormous scale. It sounds like it’s going to be tough work and they will be on site for a number of years so it is really good to know we have provided the team with the very best welfare facilities available.”

The Crossness project is part of Thames Water’s Asset Management Plan to upgrade and modernize its sewage treatment plants right across the London and Thames Valley territory which should be complete by 2020. It’s a lengthy project as the Thames Water network contains 20,000 miles of water pipes, 26 reservoirs, 350 sewage works, 68,000 miles of sewers and a staggering 1.2 million manholes.

The work at Crossness will see the JV Partnership install a THP Plant (thermal hydrolysis process), which involves the heating of leftover waste sludge to 160 degrees Celsius at high pressure. This is then fed into anaerobic digesters where ‘good bacteria’ breaks down organic material to produce bio-methane gas that is burned to generate renewable electricity.

THP plants are also being installed at Beckton and Riverside sewage works in Essex, Long Reach in Dartford, Oxford and Crawley and together they will process up to 400 tonnes dry solids of sludge per day and help generate 278GWh of electricity every year.

AVDanzer Invests £250,000 at Langley Mill site

AV Danzer AV Group invest £250,000 at Langley Mill

AVDanzer Invests £250,000 at Langley Mill site

Nottingham modular building manufacturer AVDanzer is investing £250,000 in its site at Langley Mill following a record breaking year.

In January it will install new offices, built on site by the design and fabrication teams, to accommodate 14 office staff and provide welfare facilities for up to 50 of the production team.

The new modular building will comprise AVDanzer’s flagship OpenSpace product and replaces the existing building which is no longer fit for purpose. It includes a kitchen, self-service canteen and relaxation area as well as board and meeting rooms and a first aid room. The building will also be slightly re-sited to create a new carpark area for staff and visitors. A range of environmentally friendly features such as PIR lighting and rain water harvesting will be included as well as high levels of insulation and heating.

Across the site AVDanzer is also investing in its production facilities including a new steel press and guillotine which will continue to improve efficiencies in the manufacturing process. There will also be general maintenance and refurbishment works to all areas of the site including the panel shop and stores and new toilet facilities.

The company, which manufactures modular buildings and hires site accommodation units, underwent a re-brand earlier this year to bring together its hire and manufacturing businesses. With a combined turnover in excess of £11m AVDanzer has enjoyed rapid growth in the last two years and now employs 76 staff across three sites in the Midlands, Manchester and Essex.

Commenting on the investment, AVDanzer Director Helen Scott said: “We started our manufacturing operation at Langley Mill in 1995 and have now totally outgrown the offices which are also coming to the end of their useful life. This investment will leave us well positioned to build on the success of recent years and it is great to be able to commission our own product to create a building which will comfortably see us through the next 20 years or more.”
